ABOUT MERRITT:
We respectfully acknowledge that The City of Merritt is located on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Nlaka'pamux and Syilx people. Located in the south-central interior region of BC – the small city of Merritt is surrounded by a beautiful landscape and provides outdoor adventures all year round. This region is best known for its lakes, grassland fields, ranchlands, fishing and rolling hills.

THE OPPORTUNITY:
Each Take a Hike program has one full-time Clinical Counsellor to support vulnerable youth in changing their lives. The Clinical Counsellor will work regular classroom hours on designated Take a Hike school days, typically 5 days a week, and will accompany the team on all the program field trips.
This role requires full participation on weekly field trips learning from the land as well as multi-day wilderness trips; typically, two per year ranging in length from 2 to 5 days. We are seeking a Clinical Counsellor who is an adventurer at heart and truly values the positive impact of spending time in nature; someone who recognizes that the most impactful therapeutic breakthroughs can happen outside of an office setting, perhaps in a canoe or on a mountaintop.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Individual counseling with youth during school time
  • Family sessions to support parents / guardians of youth
  • Group counseling sessions addressing youth issues
  • Participate in all parts of the program including multi-day camping trips, volunteering, and events
  • Liaise with the entire staff team, and external agencies that can provide additional support to youth
  • For the first few months, build relationships with school district and community partners to ensure Take a Hike’s success within the community
  • Facilitating youth assessments for metric and data collection

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS: Experience:

  • Master's in counselling psychology, Masters in Marriage and Family therapy or master's in social work with a Clinical focus.
  • Registered member of B.C. Association of Clinical Counsellors or a Certified member of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association
  • Experience with counseling youth and people in crisis and confident with behavior management
  • A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle is an asset

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to apply counseling practices outside of a traditional office
  • Physically fit (must be able to support and lead youth in outdoor activities)
  • Knowledge of or experience with couples and family counseling
  • Collaborative team player, able to establish and maintain positive working relationships
  • Must be comfortable in the outdoors, able to care for self and others regardless of the weather and conditions
  • Willingness to grow in their skills and comfort through weekly out trips hiking, paddling, and regular time in nature
  • Ability and skills to camp overnight on self-propelled outdoor experiences
  • Above all, a passion for supporting vulnerable youth

TERMS & COMPENSATION:
This is a full-time, permanent position and we are looking for someone to start as soon as possible. We offer a salary of $75,000-$85,000, commensurate with experience and based on a 37.5-hour work week with generous benefits that include:
