Looking for a short term (6 months -possibly 12 months) Burrowing Owl Technician

$27.00/hr

This short-term assistant will be mainly focused on supplemental feeding of nests following Standard Operating Protocols for field site visits. Supplement feed to optimize nesting success and increase juvenile survival pre and post fledging. This is a critical time for monitoring the site.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Supplemental feed with frozen pre-packaged mice to owl burrows as per supervisor’s direction
  • Record information from each site visit on Field Data Form.
  • Survey 33 artificial burrows on each site visit.
  • Record number of owls sighted.
  • Record amount of feed fed at each burrow.
  • Burrow maintenance may be required but minimal such as replace perch logs/rock if displaced or weed removal at burrow entrance.
  • Record, bag and label any owl mortality with date, burrow and put in freezer.

Qualifications/Experience:

  • A minimum of High school diploma.
  •  Outdoor or fieldwork experience preferred; comfort working alone in grassland conditions.
  •  Experience handling wildlife (e.g., mice, birds) is an asset.
  • Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Able to follow protocols and accurately complete field forms.
  • Consistent, punctual, and dependable on weekly visits.
  • Able to walk and work in outdoor terrain for several hours.
  • Trustworthy and respectful of sensitive wildlife site information.Po
