Position Summary

Commissionaires BC is hiring casual on-call Detention Guards to work at the RCMP detachment in Merritt.

Under the direction of the RCMP Member responsible for Cell Block Operations, Detention Guards monitor the safety and well-being of persons in custody and perform related duties as required.

Applicants must live within a 60-minute drive of the detachment.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Observe and check prisoners regularly (including CCTV monitoring)
• Assist RCMP with prisoner searches
• Record prisoner activity and maintain logbooks
• Maintain cleanliness and security of cellblock areas
• Search cells before and after occupancy and report damage
• Secure personal effects of prisoners
• Monitor fire safety procedures
• Handle laundry and dispense approved prescription medications (under supervision)
• Perform other duties as required

Qualifications

• Must be 19 years or older
• Valid Basic First Aid (OFA Level 1 or equivalent) or willingness to obtain
• Able to obtain RCMP Reliability Clearance (4–6 months processing time)
• Fluent in English (reading, writing, speaking)
• Meet RCMP vision standard (V4)
• Physically able to lift up to 20 kg, bend, and climb stairs
• Able to work independently and remain calm under stress
• Willing to complete required detention guard and WHMIS training
