Looking for a Mine Engineer in Training

$74,000 to $90,000

Position Overview: Coeur New Afton is seeking motivated and detail-oriented Engineers in Training (EITs) to join the Technical Services team at our underground block caving operation. As an integral part of New Afton’s Technical Services team, you will gain exposure to a wide variety of technical growth opportunities. The Mine Engineer in Training will be initially placed dependent on the successful candidate’s relevant experience and current business needs.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include rotations in one or more of the following areas:

Mine Planning:

  • Prepare long-range production planning updates using PCBC production planning software
  • Perform mine tonnage, grade and metal tracking and reconciliations
  • Monitor draw compliance, cave propagation and performance
  • Regularly update ORB draw management program incorporating stakeholder recommendations (ie. geotechnical, geology, planning, operations)
  • Preparation of drill and blast letters as needed
  • Support with preparation of design change drawings, progress tracking and developing mid-range plans
  • Support the Integrated Operations Center with short range planning where required
  • Prepare regular mine reports and plans, cost estimates, trade-off studies, and economic justifications
  • Participate in regular underground inspections and field observations
  • Monitor productivity rates and other KPIs to identify improvement opportunities

Projects:

  • Develop project plans and schedules, and monitor progress (e.g. earned-value) against these plans
  • Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and other departments to ensure successful project delivery
  • Monitor and manage contractor and consultant performance, review proposals, and ensure quality control and safety compliance
  • Develop project budgets and provide monthly forecast updates
  • Manage project documentation, ensuring all relevant information is accurately recorded and reported
  • Prepare regular project status reports, support project controls and procurement processes

Ventilation:

  • Complete ventilation audits and inspections
  • Develop and communicate detailed short and mid-term ventilation plans to operations and maintenance teams
  • Design and maintain ventilation model and drawings using VentSim and Deswik mine planning software
  • Monitor performance of primary and auxiliary ventilation systems and troubleshoot as required to maintain safety of underground workers
  • Provide and maintain updated emergency egress prints

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mining engineering
  • Previous engineering experience at an underground mining operation is considered an asset, with preference for block caving, sub-level caving, or stoping experience
  • Registration, or immediate eligibility to register, with EGBC as an EIT
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite
  • Experience using Deswik, Surpac, PCBC software considered an asset
  • Ability to drive a manual transmission vehicle in an underground environment

Other Requirements

Candidates will be required to participate in a comprehensive qualification process, including:

  • Completion of pre-placement functional screen
  • Provide proof of a valid Class 5 driver’s license
  • Demonstrate eligibility to work in Canada
  • Provide confirmation of valid educational requirements
