POSITION: Community Support Worker, Community Inclusion (Temporary Full-time)

START DATE: As soon as possible

LOCATION: Merritt, BC

LENGTH: Approx. 6 months or upon return of incumbent

HOURS OF WORK: 35 hrs/week

REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

· Educational Assistant and Community Support certificate or recent related education and recent experience supporting and assisting individuals with physical and/or developmental disabilities. Or a combination of education, training and experience

· Valid Class 5 DLandsafe driving record (abstract)

· Own vehicle (must be able to transport up to 4 passengers) with Business Use and 5 Million Liability insurance

· Current CPR-C, MANDT, Suicide Awareness (safeTALK), Safe Food Handling and Medication Management training are required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

· Demonstrated knowledge and ability to interact effectively and support individuals with physical and developmental disabilities

· Strong experience providing life skills support and supporting individuals in their personal development towards individual goals

· Strong ability to assist individuals with feeding, grooming, and personal care

· Ability to work effectively independently and as a strong member of a team

· Strong ability to handle crisis situations effectively, set professional boundaries, act professionally, problem solve and make ethical decisions

· Ability to encourage participation in appropriate and healthy community inclusion activities

· Ability to work co-operatively and effectively with other professionals, co-workers and supervisors

· Strong ability to recognize, analyze and deal effectively with behaviours and crisis situations using appropriate interventions

· Strong ability to provide medication management and follow policies and procedures

DUTIES:

The role provides individual one on one support to clients with developmental disabilities in areas including community inclusion, accessing community resources, emotional support and life skills development. Responsibilities may include:

  • Providing support in daily life skills including physical, vocational, recreational, social and emotional development
  • Assisting clients to integrate in the community and to achieve the greatest degree of independence and quality of life possible
  • Assisting clients with activities, shopping, errands, household cleanliness and food preparation
  • Performing personal/hygiene care
  • Transporting participants
