Looking for a Temporary, Casual, Fixed term contract, Internship / Co-op Administration/Clerical & Peer Support 

$17.85 an hour

The Nicola Valley Shelter and Support Society is offering a 200-hour Administration/Clerical & Peer Support Work Placement for individuals receiving income or disability assistance. This placement combines office-skills training with foundational peer support skills—creating a well-rounded pathway into administrative, outreach, or frontline community-service roles.

Participants will receive hands-on experience, mentorship, and professional development while contributing meaningfully to the work of NVSSS.

Placement Highlights — What You’ll Learn and Do

1. Office Software Proficiency

  • Learn Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Practice electronic filing and basic data entry
  • Support with document preparation and simple reports

2. Customer Service & Reception

  • Handle phone calls, emails, and walk-in inquiries professionally
  • Greet guests with compassion and trauma-informed communication
  • Provide information and support in a calm and respectful manner

3. Document Handling & Record Keeping

  • Maintain digital and paper files
  • Learn FOIPPA-aligned confidentiality and privacy practices
  • Assist with forms, logs, and administrative records

4. Organizational & Scheduling Skills

  • Help coordinate staff schedules, meetings, and calendars
  • Assist with daily office flow, task tracking, and resource inventory

5. Workplace Communication

  • Strengthen written and verbal communication
  • Practice team communication, note-taking, and internal updates

Peer Support Responsibilities6. Foundational Peer Support Skills

  • Learn how to apply lived/living experience to support others
  • Understand boundaries, ethics, and personal wellness in peer roles
  • Practice empathetic listening and supportive conversation

7. Supporting Wellness & Navigation

  • Provide low-barrier, non-judgmental support to shelter guests
  • Offer guidance on resources such as meals, supplies, or referrals
  • Assist guests in navigating the shelter environment respectfully

8. Engagement & Cultural Safety

  • Help create a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere
  • Participate in wellness activities or cultural events where appropriate
  • Use compassionate, strengths-based approaches with all individuals

9. Role Modelling & Community Connection

  • Model positive behaviour, respect, and teamwork
  • Support community connection and reduce stigma for vulnerable individuals

Support & Training Provided Administrative Training

Hands-on instruction in office software, data management, and workflow organization.

Job-Specific Certifications (as eligible)

  • Occupational First Aid Level 1
  • WHMIS
  • Food Safe Level 1
  • Optional introduction to Peer Support fundamentals (if available)
