$17.85 an hour

Community Kitchen Assistant (Work Placement Opportunity)

Are you looking to build practical skills and confidence for a future career in food service? The Nicola Valley Shelter and Support Society is offering two structured, supportive Community Kitchen Assistant placements as part of a work readiness initiative. These 200-hour placements are designed to help participants develop hands-on skills in a real kitchen environment while building confidence, employability, and workplace skills.

Placement Highlights – What You’ll Learn and Do:

As a Community Kitchen Assistant, you will support the day-to-day operations of our Community Kitchen by:

  • Assisting with basic food preparation, serving, and dishwashing
  • Following food safety and hygiene protocols (including temperature checks and sanitation)
  • Setting up tables and serving areas for daily meal service
  • Cleaning and disinfecting kitchen surfaces, equipment, and dining areas
  • Participating in team meetings and following shift checklists
  • Communicating effectively with staff, volunteers, and fellow participants
  • Providing respectful, dignified meal service to clients in a community setting

Training & Certifications (provided or supported as part of placement):

  • Food Safe Level 1
  • Occupational First Aid Level 1
  • WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)

Skills You Will Gain:

  • Food preparation and kitchen safety
  • Cleaning and sanitation procedures
  • Time management, task prioritization and work collaboratively with kitchen staff and volunteers
  • Communication and teamwork in a fast-paced environment
  • Understanding of workplace health and safety best practice

This opportunity is ideal for individuals currently receiving income or disability

assistance who are motivated to gain experience and pursue employment in the food

service or hospitality sectors. No prior kitchen experience is necessary - just a

willingness to learn, a positive attitude, and a commitment to completing the 200-hour

placement.
